Ex-legislators' forum meet on November 30

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Former Legislators' Forum will meet in the old Assembly hall here on November 30 to discuss issues pending with the Government.

Boy consumes pesticide, dies

Kakinada: Paramsetti Ajay, 3, who consumed pesticide kept in the cattle shed mistaking it to be a cool drink at his house in Geddadavari palem of K. Gangavaram mandal, died in Government General Hospital here on Thursday. The Pamarru police have registered a case. - Correspondent

Insurance cover for Ayyappa devotees

HYDERABAD: The Oriental Insurance Company has announced a package to cover Ayyappa devotees going to Sabarimala by any mode of transport. It will remain active from the date of journey to the day of return to the starting point or 30 days, whichever is earlier.

PDSU for probe into encounter killings

HYDERABAD: The State committee of the Progressive Democratic Students' Union (PDSU) has demanded a judicial inquiry into the alleged encounter killing of three students belonging to a college in Narayanpet of Mahabubnagar district recently.

S.L. Padma, general secretary of PDSU, charged the police with "abducting" six students and doing away with three of them later in an encounter. She further alleged that the remaining students were being tortured by the police and demanded their release. - Special Correspondent

Extend relief to

rain-hit: CPI

HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has urged the Government to launch relief measures on a war-footing in the rain-battered areas of Prakasam, Nellore and Chittoor districts.

In a statement here on Thursday, its State Council secretary K. Narayana said that normal life was paralysed in colonies surrounding Tirupati and weavers were badly hit in Nellore, Varadayyapalem and Srikalahasti. He demanded compensation and supply of 25 kg rice to every family whose house collapsed. - Special Correspondent

festival holidays

HYDERABAD: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has urged the Government to declare five Hindu festivals as closed bank holidays under the Negotiable Instrument Act from next year.

VHP West AP provincial unit working president B. Manikyachari and general secretary Ch. Laxminathacharyulu in a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said that Bhogi (January 13, 2006), Sivaratri (February 26), Sri Ramanavami (April 6), Sri Krishnashtami (August 16) and Durgashtmi (October 1) should be declared as closed bank holidays. - Special Correspondent

Water released from Somasila project

Nellore: Authorities of Somasila project released 46,880 cusecs water in the early hours of Thursday. The reservoir touched a level of 50.915 tmfct and since any storage beyond that level was not advisable the discharge of water had become inevitable, officials said.

Meanwhile, Collector M. Ravichandra said that there was no cyclone impact on the district and that the present rain was mainly due to the north-east monsoon.

During his visit to Sullurpet and Tada mandals on Thursday, he visited the local PHCs to assess the preparedness of medical and health staff. - Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI: Sri Tridandi Narayana Chinna Jeeyar Swamy who locked horns with the Government and the TTD over the demolition of the 1000

-pillar mandapam and also over the alleged violation of the principles by temple priests in the performance of certain rituals has on Thursday trekked up the Tirumala footpath.

Significantly, P.V.R.K. Prasad, former bureaucrat and the head of the three member committee constituted by the Governmentwas said to have called on the swamiji in the temple.

Nellore: The district unit of Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Council (APCLC), has strongly condemned the attack on the house of Seshaiah a professor and State general secretary, on Wednesday night.

In a statement issued here on Thursday, the APCLC, has expressed apprehension about the frequent attacks in the name of `Cobras', as part of attempts to stifle the voice of civil liberty functionaries.

CHITTOOR: Reproductive and child health programme will be implemented in rural areas in order to provide better medical services to the people, according to District Collector S.S. Rawath.

Talking to newsmen here on Thursday Mr. Rawath said that 3,000 women volunteers have been selected from 65 mandals in the district for implementing the programme and they will be given training in a phased manner. - Correspondent

Cadets donate blood

TIRUPATI: Thirty cadets belonging to the 29 Andhra battalion of NCC's Tirupati group donated blood to SVRR Government General Hospital here.

According to Captain S.Chandra, the officiating Commanding Officer, the cadets were from the TTD-run Sri Venkateswara Arts College, Sri Govindarajaswamy Arts College and Sri Venkateswara Junior College. A visually challenged student, B. Sudhakar, also volunteered to donate blood. - Staff Reporter

Rajahmundry: G.S.L. Medical College student T. Chaitanya was selected for Inter-University Table Tennis Tournament. D.B.J. Ambedkar, Physical Director of the College said that the selections were held at NTR health university, Vijayawada, in which 40 students from different medical colleges participated. Water for rabi

Kakinada: The Irrigation Development Advisory Committee has decided to give water during rabi to 4.50 lakh acres ayacut in Godavari Eastern and Central delta and 53,000 acres of ayacut under Yeleru project, according to East Godavari Collector Anil Kumar Singhal. He said here on Thursday that the meeting had decided to give water for the second crop to the entire 10,13,161 acres in eastern, central and western delta areas in both East and West Godavari districts. Rajahmundry: Bank of Baroda, Rajahmundry, has extended its business hours from Wednesday. Senior Branch Manager of the bank K. Lakshmana Rao inaugurated the operations from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. He said that bank would be celebrating Baroda Trader's month up to December 31 during which customers would get concession on interest rate. It would also not charge documentation and processing charges.
