COIMBATORE: The Director of Seed Certification has urged the private seed producers to make use of the schemes available with the Department of Seed Certification, Coimbatore.
Variety to be studied
If they registered with the Department, their seed variety would be studied. The variety would be recognised for recommendation to the farming community, said a press release from the Department. At the recently concluded `All-India Meeting for Private Seed Producer', the Director In-Charge of Seed Certification, S. Vijayan, said that if the seed possessed the required "genetic purity" it was registered provisionally. And, if it proved its worth in farm trials, it was registered permanently. "The main objective of this process is to study private varieties and recognise it for the welfare of farming community," said Mr Vijayan. The share of the private sector in the State had gone up to 65 per cent from 5 per cent in the past two decades, he observed. At present, the State had 1,017 varieties from the private producers' kitty, the release said.
Voluntary registration
The Joint Director of Seed Certification, O. M. Palanisamy, said that companies which preferred voluntary registration could log on to www.seedtamilnadu.com.
