CHENNAI: "I read, I forget/I see, I remember/I do, I understand." It was not for nothing that P. Iyamperumal, the executive director of the Tamilnadu Science and Technology Centre, quoted this "old Chinese proverb" to a bunch of school students on Thursday morning. He was just reiterating what they would be doing for the next two days putting "Physics Around Us" into practical models for understanding the concepts better.
Inauguration
The inter school science exhibition 2005-Physics Around Us, organised by the Tamilnadu Science and Technology Centre and Madras Science Association, was inaugurated by chairman of the Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS) M. Anandakrishnan at the Periyar Science and Technology Centre, Kotturpuram. More than 40 schools in and around Chennai came up with projects ranging from tsunami warning systems to train accident prevention methods.
First time
Kemmy Jose and V. Keerthivasan, class IX students from St. John's Matriculation School, said that they were participating in a science contest for the first time. That did not stop them from explaining with ease the principle of capillarity in absorbing liquid and how it works for a fountain pen, a sponge and a tree. "Waste is not waste," said A.V. Aarathy vehemently. Aarathy and her friend S. Chetna from Jain Vidyaashram had picked up some rotten vegetables and put them with a copper plate and a zinc rod that became an anode and cathode respectively to produce enough energy to run a clock. "Think how much you can save by not buying batteries," asked Aarathy. One could only nod in agreement.
