Hyderabad : A compound wall falls with a thud as a bulldozer mows into it. The poclain swiftly scoops up the debris and dumps it into a waiting truck. Yet one more structure is gone. The total number of properties pulled down for road widening goes up by a notch.

From Charminar to Jubilee Hills and Himayatnagar to Secunderbad road widening is on at a brisk pace. But there is not a murmur of protest either in the Old City or in the swank Bajara Hills. Properties are being acquired with consent and negotiations. During the last five months, the MCH took over 1,012 properties all over the city to widen 57 km of road length. In terms of money, the 66700 sq. yards of land obtained works out to a whopping Rs. 150 crores.

The model road

On Thursday Mayor T. Krishna Reddy, his deputy, Subash Chanderjee, Standing Committee Chairman D. Mohan and MCH Commissioner Sanjay Jaju inspected the road-widening works. "This is a people-friendly road widening. Not a single property is obtained with coercion", remarked Mr. Jaju and hoped the present road-widening work would be completed by the year-end.

He said Raj Bhavan road, where 71 properties were pulled down, would be the model. The same type of development would be replicated elsewhere. As on today widening is on 55 roads in different parts of the city.

In the old city a total of 483 properties are being affected in the nine roads taken up for widening. From Charminar to Falaknuma 208 properties are identified for removal and of these 45 are pulled down. On the Gulzar Houz-Panjeshah road 102 properties will be affected (12 demolished), Kotla Alijah road 12 properties affected (two removed), Panch Mohalla road 22 properties affected (11 demolished).

A number of roads around Charminar are proposed to be widened to decongest the area surrounding the monument.
