Coimbatore: Next time when you happen to spot a speeding lorry on any arterial road in the district, do not think that you can do nothing. Dial 0422-2220077 and prefer a complaint with the District Special Branch Police.
Fatal accident
The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Coimbatore Range, M.N. Manjunatha, told reporters on Wednesday that once the call, giving the registration number of the lorry or any other vehicle, landed at the District Special Branch office, the officer in charge of the jurisdiction would be alerted. The vehicle would be intercepted and the driver would be booked for the offence. If the vehicle caused fatal accident, the vehicle would be confiscated. The driver would be arrested and produced before a magistrate. Hitherto, the drivers were allowed to go on station bail and face the case. The Transport Department would be alerted for initiating action on the registration certificate and permit of the vehicle and on the licence of the driver. The DIG said that following the fatal accidents near Palladam that claimed seven lives, the police and transport departments have decided to get tough with the drivers of speeding lorries violating road rules. All the sub-division officers and Station House Officers were asked to deal with violation of road rules seriously. The DIG sought the cooperation of the public to make the effort fruitful.
