BANGALORE: Violation of building byelaws are not being caused by those who are ignorant of the laws but by those who think they have the financial and political power to get away with it, said Commissioner of Police M.N. Vidyashankar. He said that it was a misnomer to think that those who committed the violations were poor and illiterate people. "The more the muscle power, the larger the scale of violations," he said at a public debate on "Building Violations: Is demolition the answer?" organised by the Public Affairs Committee on Thursday. Mr. Vidyshankar said his conclusion was based on studies conducted by the BDA on building violations and violators over the past year. The BDA, he said, was thinking of amending the bylaw so that officials who are responsible for the area when the violations occur will be penalised. "We have formed a think tank within the BDA to formulate a change in the law. A proposal will be submitted to the Government shortly," he said. Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Additional Commissioner (Finance) and Engineer-in-Chief P.K. Srihari spoke.
