BANGALORE: Commissioner of Police Ajai Kumar Singh on Thursday assured a delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders that the investigation of the kidnapping case registered against party MLA Nirmal Kumar Surana will be handed over to an officer other than the Ulsoor Inspector. The Ulsoor police have registered a case of kidnapping, extortion and criminal intimidation against Mr. Surana, Col. R.K. Mishra and four others on a complaint by Anthony Swamy, an educational consultant. Col. Mishra has filed a complaint with the Ulsoor police that Anthony Swamy had taken Rs. 12 lakhs from him promising a medical seat for his son and had cheated him. Anthony has said in the complaint that Mr. Surana and others had kidnapped him, extorted Rs. 5 lakhs from him and threatened him to repay the remaining Rs. 7 lakhs to Col. Mishra. The BJP leaders urged Dr. Singh to ensure a fair investigation into the case against Mr. Surana and replace the Ulsoor Inspector Puttuswamy, who is investigating the case, with some other officer. The delegation urged the Commissioner that there were several cases of cheating pending against Anthony. Dr. Singh told presspersons that the investigation officer is being changed not because of the request made by the BJP leaders. "It is a practce to hand over the investigation to an officer from other jurisdiction when ever there is a case and a counter case," he said. After meeting the Commissioner, Mr. Surana told presspersons that the delegation had apprised Dr. Singh of the "criminal antecedents" of Anthony Swamy. The BJP delegation comprised Shivajinagar MLA Katta Subramanya Naidu, party spokesperson S. Suresh Kumar, city unit President Ashwathnarayana, and city unit spokesperson S. Prakash.
