MUMBAI: Lawyers defending extradited don Abu Salem on Friday moved a TADA court here, alleging he was beaten up during interrogation in a lock-up. Later, the judge ordered the Mumbai police to produce him in court on November 29 to record his statement on the charge. Salem, remanded to police custody in a 1995 murder case of real estate developer Pradeep Jain, told his lawyers that he was beaten up on Thursday night at Bhoiwada police station lock up, defence lawyer Ashok Sarogi told designated TADA judge P.V. Bhavkar. The lawyers also demanded that Salem be placed in judicial custody instead of police custody in view of the alleged police assault and that he be sent for medical check-up. Mr. Justice Bhavkar ordered the anti-terrorism squad of the Mumbai police to produce Salem in his court on November 29 to record his statement on the charge of assault on him. He said he would also take a decision on the demand for his judicial custody. PTI
Monica's remand extended
Hyderabad Staff Reporter writes Special Judge for Economic Offences G. Chakradhar Rao on Friday extended the remand of Abu Salem's companion, Monica Bedi, till December 9. Monica, lodged in the Chanchalguda prison, was produced before Mr. Chakradhar Rao through videoconference as the Special Judge for CBI cases, C.V. Subrahamanyam, was on leave. The hearing on the bail petition filed by Babu Rao, counsel for Ms. Bedi, was posted to Monday. Earlier, Abu Salem's lawyer, Ashok Saravgi, came to the court "on learning that she would be produced before the Magistrate." Later, he told mediapersons that Ms. Bedi had been taken to Bhopal. "I got the information from the Court that she has been taken away to Bhopal." But the prison authorities said in the evening that Monica was in Chanchalguda jail.
