PJR cries foul over `Pothireddypadu'

Meeting of MLAs concerned to discuss `injustice' to Telangana region sought Meeting of MLA to discuss the issue sought

  • Government's stand not clear on the GO, says the MLA
  • Injustice to non-Rayalaseema regions feared
  • Chief Minister urged to convince MLAs on the move

Hyderabad : Khairatabad MLA (Congress) P. Janardhan Reddy has asked the Government to keep in abeyance the G.O. No.170 regarding the release of 40, 000 cusecs of water from Pothireddypadu Head Regulator to Rayalaseema. He has also sought a meeting of the MLAs concerned to prevent injustice to Telangana and Andhra regions.

    Excess waters

Talking to the media here on Friday, Mr. Reddy said the Government had not clarified its intention in drafting the GO effecting irrigation facilities to 7.63 lakh acres and drinking water to a population of 15 lakh, including Chennai city.

As there was no mention of usage of excess waters, the Government Order would mean that the assured water of Telangana and Andhra regions could be utilised to meet the demands of the Rayalaseema region.

He said the State was already suffering due to construction of Almatti Dam in Karnataka and what little releases were there through it would now be irrationally distributed due to the provisions made in the GO. In fact Pothireddypadu itself would turn out to be another Almatti dam affecting the interests of the non-Rayalaseema regions.

    Supply to twin cities

Water supply to the twin cities had earlier been envisaged through the Krishna river, but the move to divert water to Rayalaseema would deprive the city of water. It was planned to bring the Krishna waters through the third phase also in the past and it must be adhered to, he said.

He said the Chief Minister should at least convince MLAs that there were no malafides to the move on Pothireddypadu and assure them that only excess waters would be utilised to benefit the Rayalaseema region.
