CHENNAI: A wet day did not dampen the mood of the young athletes as a few records emerged at the end of the first day's proceedings in the SRM-junior national athletics championship at the Nehru stadium on Friday. P. Thrinadh, a 16-year old from Andhra Pradesh, set the first record at the 21st edition of the championship when he clipped 0.38 seconds from the existing boys' under-18 meet and national record of 3m 56.39s in the 1500 metres event set by Ghamanda Ram of Rajasthan in Chennai in 2002. The youngster lay third in the bunch till the final lap when with 300 metres to go, he shot into lead. The contest went close, thanks to the determined effort of Ravinder of Delhi to catch up. That just 0.21 seconds separated the two underlined the dramatic finish. In the girls' section in the under-20 category, Tamil Nadu's N.C. Mohanal managed to keep down the spirited fight of Punjab's Iqbal Kaur. A winner earlier in the National, this Erode girl is a sports hostel BBA student of Kandan Arts and Science College.
