CHENNAI:
The heavy rain in the State has taken its toll of State Transport Corporations too.
Officials of transport undertakings said several buses were damaged, posing an additional financial burden on the companies.
Long distance services were being operated via alternative routes for the benefit of the public. A senior State Express Transport Corporation official said services from Chennai to Tiruchirappalli, Kumbakonam and Thanjavur could not be operated on the regular routes due to water-logging and damage to the roads.
The services from Chennai to Tiruchirappalli were operated via Salem. But there was poor patronage for the diverted services as the journey took more time. As regards Chennai, a senior Metropolitan Transport Corporation official said the footboards of 60 buses were damaged in the past few days.
The vehicles were being operated after repairs. Nearly 280 buses were not run on Friday morning as the crew could not report for work.
