HYDERABAD: The Congress Party will opt for a constitutional amendment to get over the legal problems in implementing the 5 per cent reservation for Muslims.

This was announced here on Saturday by Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president K. Keshava Rao while addressing a two-day national workshop on "Muslim reservations", organised by the South India Council (SIC) in coordination with the Confederation of Muslim Institutions of India (CMII), here.

Dr. Rao stated that he had discussed the issue with United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi during a meeting in New Delhi on Friday. He asserted that the party "would not compromise on reservations for Muslims and was prepared to go the whole hog, as it had the political will to implement them".

He described the recent High Court judgment while striking down the GO on reservations as a "victory for all of us" since it surmised that even religion could be basis for reservations, provided social and economic backwardness was considered. At the same time, he said "let the judiciary know the needs of society and the moorings of the people."
