PUDUKOTTAI: Intensive use of chemical fertilizers had undesirable effects on the environment and to counter this farm wastes should be recycled, speakers stressed during a day-long training programme conducted at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Vamban, near here recently. Chemical fertilizers affected soil fertility and productivity. Organic manures were the only alternatives to maintain soil fertility and productivity. Agro wastes such as coir pith and press mud could be properly decomposed to make manures, the farmers were told during the training programme. Head of KVK, S.P. Ramanathan, spoke on the need to compost organic wastes, while assistant professor S. Marathagam explained in detail the means to compost farm wastes such as sugarcane trash, weeds and coir wastes. Assistant professor T. Senthil Kumar said chopping up farm wastes aided easier decomposition. Farm manager T. Parthiban spoke on the advantages and long-term benefits of organic farming. Twenty-five farmers from in and around Pudukottai participated in the training programme. The Vamban KVK will conduct a similar training programme for dairy farmers on its premises on November 29 on `Efficient Management of Dairy Animals.' India is one of the largest producers of milk in the world and yet the district lagged behind in milk production. Success lay in efficient breeding, feeding, management and disease control in dairy farms, Dr. Ramanathan said in a press release. Farmers in the district can contact the Head, KVK, Vamban Colony, Pudukottai - 622303 or call 04322-205687 to participate in the programme.
