Probe on into theft at electronics shop

Staff Reporter

Police verifying background of staff

Thiruvananthapuram: The city police have circulated among leading cell phone service providers the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers of the 197 mobile handsets that were reported stolen from an electronics shop in the city on Friday.

Circle Inspector S. Anil Kumar said the police were yet to ascertain how the "burglars" had entered the shop. He said the makeshift roof of the shop adjacent to the electronics goods showroom was not strong enough to support the weight of the burglars who were believed to have entered the building by cutting open a grill on the first floor.

The burglars had entered the showroom housed on the ground floor by removing an air-conditioner weighing nearly 70 kg. The police suspected at least two persons were involved in the entire operation.

A pipe wrench, two screwdrivers, one plier and two hacksaw blades suspected to have been used to carry out the theft had been recovered. The implements were found wrapped in an English newspaper printed in Kolkata. The police had found a shoe mark from the scene of the crime. Despite heavy rain, there were no muddy footprints in the showroom. The investigators were also trying to find out how the burglars exited the showroom with the loot.

The police said the building at its rear end housed a mess and dormitory for the showroom staff. "It is difficult to carryout a burglary without alerting those sleeping in the building," an official said. The police are verifying the background of the staff. The owner of the shop will be questioned soon.
