Anitcham heaves to new National mark

CHENNAI : A. Anitcham's National record-breaking performance in the SRM-National junior athletics championship at the Nehru Stadium gave host Tamil Nadu something to cheer about on Sunday.

Anitcham did herself proud in the girls' under-18 shot put event. The 12th standard student threw the shot to a distance of 12.49 metres in her second attempt and that bettered the National mark of 12.27m held by Seema Antil since 1999. The effort was way ahead of the meet record of 11.85m set by Aplesh in 2003.

In the girls' under-16 section, Poovamma with her splendid record-breaking run in the 400m has made many observers sit up.

A 10th standard student from Mangalore, the long-limbed girl had excellent strides as she shot off from the fifth lane to finish a handsome winner, clocking 55.43s, erasing the National record of 56.49s (Satti Geetha of AP in 1997) and meet record of 57.31 (Vijila of AP in 2002).
