Works in Kozhikode railway station progressing as planned

Staff Reporter

Kallayi -Kozhikode track to become operational soon

KOZHIKODE: The development works at the Kozhikode railway station in connection with the doubling of the Mangalore-Shoranur rail line will be completed as planned, said sources at the construction engineering section of the Kozhikode station.

The development works include the setting up of parking lot, shifting of the parcel office, building of a passenger care centre and other facilities. Lack of funds, among others, was alleged to be the reason for the delay in the completion of the works, including the construction of the fourth platform.

"Land acquisition has been the main problem. The progress of the works will be evident by March. The building to house the passenger care centre for the redressal of complaints is complete. Only the equipment need to be installed," the sources said. The building for the parcel office is nearing completion and work on the parking/movement area is being expedited. Sources at the railway station said the foot over-bridge, from the first platform to the fourth platform, would be ready within two months. The estimated cost of the bridge is Rs.1 crore. The first platform now has a capacity to accommodate trains with 18 coaches and the third platform 20 coaches. The fourth one will have the capacity to accommodate 24 coaches. The double track between Kallayi and Kozhikode is expected to become operational in a few months.
