CHENNAI: All-India Congress Committee secretary K.B. Krishnamurthi has blamed the poor infrastructure in the State, particularly in Chennai city, for the heavy flooding after the torrential rains. Addressing media persons at the State party headquarters, Satyamurthi Bhavan, here on Monday, Mr. Krishnamurthi alleged that the State Government's neglect in improving infrastructure including drainage and sewerage systems had led to heavy stagnation of flood waters in many parts of the State, which he feared, might lead to outbreak of water-borne diseases. The AICC secretary said apart from loss of lives, several thousands of people had lost their homes and properties and farmers their crops. He wanted the Government to plunge into action. Apart from providing immediate relief to the people affected, the Government should plan long-term measures to provide a permanent solution to flood related problems. The Congress Party, the secretary said, had already directed its party district units to organise relief camps, distribute food pockets and clothes to the people. The Central Government, he assured, would sanction sufficient funds, as it was aware of the magnitude of the problem. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president G.K. Vasan would meet the AICC president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh along with Congress MPs, belonging to the State soon to apprise them of the "grim" situation in the State and appeal for generous central assistance.
