Varsity award for Vempati

HYDERABAD: Eminent Kuchipudi guru Vempati Chinna Satyam has been chosen by Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University for Vishista Puraskaram for his outstanding contribution to the field of dance. Avula Manjulatha, Vice-Chancellor, on Monday said the award would be presented by the Chief Minister on December 2. - Special Correspondent

Naxalite killed

WARANGAL: One naxalite was killed in an exchange of fire with the police here on Monday evening. A police party engaged in combing operations in the forest area near Nagaram encountered a group of naxals and there was an exchange of fire. The naxal is yet to be identified. - Staff Reporter

3 naxals arrested

Rajahmundry: Three CPI(ML) Janashakti (Rajanna group) naxalites were arrested on Monday near Yerrampalem of Rampachodavaram agency area. Nagulakonda dalam commander Nomula Balaraju (31) alias Naganna, Pasumuri Srinivasa rao (20) alias Satish alias Sampath of Dubbaka of Medak district, Pandela Bummaiah (35) alias Papanna were arrested by the police. Additional SP (Operations) V. Satyanarayana said the three were extorting money from business community and poultry farm owners. - Staff Reporter

12 Kasturba schools

KADAPA: Twelve Kasturba girls' schools were sanctioned to Kadapa district, Joint Collector Kanthilal Dande said on Monday. The schools would be completed by March next year and they would function from June next, he said during the `Dial Your Collector' programme. - Staff Reporter

BC organisations' plea

HYDERABAD: Representatives of 45 BC organisations have demanded that the Government give up its proposal to reduce gram panchayats from 22,000 to 8,000. Presidents, secretaries and senior leaders of panchayats at a meeting here resolved that there was no need to reduce the number. - Special Correspondent

"Don't remove Punnaiah"

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Dalit Organisations' United Forum has criticised the Government for its move to remove Justice K. Punnaiah from the post of Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh SC/ST Commission on the grounds of age. Six leaders of the forum urged the Chief Minister to continue Mr. Justice Punnaiah in the post for having done pioneering work resulting in the issuance of 40 GOs. - Special Correspondent

Probe ordered into

alleged detention

HYDERABAD: The district judge of Mahabubnagar was directed by a Division Bench of the High Court to conduct an inquiry into the alleged detention and torture of Rajappa by the police.

Chief Justice G. S. Singhvi and Justice Bilal Nazki passed the orders while hearing the writ petition filed by Phool Bai, wife of Rajappa, seeking production of her husband alleging his illegal detention. The court was told that Rajappa was arrested in connection with the stolen goods from the lorry he was driving. His wife alleged that he was tortured. - Legal Correspondent

NIZAMABAD: The Indian Red Cross Society in association with the AIDS Society (IMA), Lions Club of Nizamabad (Diamond) and the Nizamabad Officers' Club will conduct an AIDS awareness week from November 29 to December 5.

Mayor D. Sanjay will inaugurate the programme planned to create awareness among people on AIDS, at the Urban Health Centre, Chandrasekhar Colony, here. Venkat Ramana and Shyam Kumar, doctors, will speak on the HIV/AIDS Prevention-Role of Society.

IRCS general secretary N. Ramchander said on December 1, World AIDS Day, a seminar will be organised at Armoor bus stand on `Bus Passenger Awareness-HIV/AIDS'. Jagadeeswar Reddy and Sri Hari Narayana, doctors, will speak. - Staff Reporter

Robbers strike

at six places

NIZAMABAD: Three masked persons carrying arms struck at the Nizam Sagar mandal headquarter village and attacked one Lakshmi Nara Goud and plundered property worth about Rs. 1 lakh from six houses in the wee hours of Monday, according to information reaching here.

They broke into five locked houses and decamped with cash, gold jewellery and other valuables. The culprits attacked Mr. Goud with a pestle when he resisted them. He suffered head injuries in the process and was admitted to the Government Hospital at Banswada.

Superintendent of Police Mahesh Chandra Laddha said the police had rounded up three suspects and were interrogating them. - Staff Reporter

inaugurated

ADILABAD: Adilabad Collector R. Subba Rao on Monday inaugurated the State-level under-19 hockey tournament for Intermediate students at the Indira Priyardarshini Stadium here. Fourteen district-level teams were participating in the tournament from which a State-level team would be selected. Project Director District Water Management Agency L. Venkatram Reddy, district secretary of Olympic Association Narayan Reddy, Regional Intermediate Officer Mohan Rao, organiser of Intermediate college games federation Malleshwar Rao, president of the District Hockey Aassociation B.
