NEW DELHI: Almost two weeks after a black flag protest by members of the All India Students Association (AISA) during a visit by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to the campus sparking off a controversy, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) president Mona Das was censured by the highest decision making body of the student community here, but the impeachment motion against her was defeated. The Extraordinary University General Body Meeting (UGBM) saw the student community brave the cold to participate in a debate and finally put their vote for the censure motion at around three in the morning on Sunday. The meeting saw the resolutions adopted by the JNUSU Council in a meeting on November 19 being placed before the students for a vote. The censure motion saw 458 students cast their vote for it and 277 against it.
Censure motion passed
The JNUSU Council had passed a censure motion earlier condemning Mona Das for her absence from the campus during the Prime Minister's visit without any explanation or communication. But the much talked about impeachment motion, which the JNUSU had asked the students to defeat on the plea that it would make the administration stronger and the union weaker was defeated. While 285 students voted in favour of the impeachment, it was opposed by 431 students. Although peaceful, the UGBM saw some tension towards the end, with a section of the student community climbing on to the dais, resulting in the conclusion of the meeting following the counting on the impeachment.
