Nursing council decision criticised

Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM : The Mahatma Gandhi University Employees Union has criticised the action of the Kerala Nursing Council (KNC) cancelling the recognition of the nursing college under School of Medical Education. Speaking to media persons here on Monday, acting president Sony George and general secretary A. Muraleedharan Pillai alleged that the KNC was under pressure of private nursing institutions, education lobbies working across the State and political interests.

According to them, it was only a few months back that the Indian Nursing Council has accorded recognition for the institution. The university had taken all steps to ensure basic infrastructure facilities at the regional centres.

The institutions working under the SME were relatively at a better position than many others. It was unfair to take the extreme step of cancelling recognition in the name of isolated incidents of ragging, they said.

The action on the part of the KNC would push the future of thousands of students and their families into doom and the Council should revoke its decision at the earliest, they said.

The union leaders also called upon the State Government to rescind the decision banning new appointments in the university.
