Equipment failure blamed for train accident

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Provisional findings of Commissioner of Railway Safety R.P. Agrawal, who inquired into the train accident in Nalgonda district on October 29, have indicated "failure of equipment and structures" as the reason.

The mishap kicked up a row with the Railways and the Government indulging in blame game. The Railways held the poor maintenance and breach in an upstream tank responsible for the sudden gush of water while the Government disputed. Senior officials of the Railways have also maintained that the bridge was relatively new and there nothing was wrong with it. The preliminary report of Mr. Agarwal pointing out the failure of the "equipment and structures" thus comes as a surprise.
