Always the true Indian

ON A PRIVATE VISIT: Kapil Dev in Kozhikode.

He could often swing the ball in and the bowlers out (of the ground) with equal élan. Kapil Dev may have hung up his boots 11 summers ago, but he remains one of India's most famous cricketers. The former Indian captain was in Kozhikode on Monday.

He came to the city on a private visit from Bangalore, where he played in an international golf tournament for cricketers. He had, in fact, won the individual trophy there, though the Indian team finished bridesmaid to Australia (so what's new? you might ask).

While in the city, he took part in a live discussion on a Delhi-based television channel. The programme was on Saurav Ganguly's omission from the Indian one-day team and the way his adoring Bengali fans reacted to it during India's `away match' against the touring South Africans in Kolkata the other day.

Kapil did not mince words. He said the Bengalis should know that they are Indians first and Bengalis later.
