Dharam Singh seeks security for Kannadigas

BANGALORE: Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh on Tuesday telephoned his Maharashtra counterpart, Vilasrao Deshmukh, and sought protection for Kannadigas living in Maharashtra. He made the call following reports of the ransacking of a restaurant owned by a Kannadiga in Pune on Monday. The attack was shown live on a Kannada television channel.

Mr. Dharam Singh warned the Shiv Sena that the Government will deal firmly with its activists if they provoke the sentiments of Kannadigas on the border issue.

Mr. Dharam Singh told presspersons here that the Government is committed to the safety of Kannadigas living outside the State.

is Vice-Chancellor

BANGALORE: Shripad Ganap Bhat, visiting Professor, University Law College, Bangalore, has been appointed the First Vice-Chancellor of the National University of Advanced Legal Studies, Ernakulam, for a period of four years. Dr. Bhat hails from Sirsi in Karnataka. — Special Correspondent

Ramaseva Mandali gets new president

BANGALORE: Mani Narayana Swamy, former IAS officer and Director of the UB group of companies, is the new President of Sree Ramaseva Mandali Trust of Chamarajpet in Bangalore. He succeeds the late N. Lakshman Rau.

After premature retirement from the IAS, Mr. Swamy served as President of American UB International in New York and President of Corporation Affairs of the UP group in New Delhi. He is a trustee of the Indian Foundation of Arts, says a Sree Rama Seva Mandali press release. — Special Correspondent

Extra halt for winter special trains

MANGALORE: Konkan Railway has decided to provide a halt for the Mangalore-Vasco-Mangalore winter special trains (0604/0603) at Suratkal and Ankola railway stations from November 27 onwards, according to a press release issued by Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. The train will operate until January 15, 2006.

Train No. 0604 bound for Vasco will arrive at Suratkal at 10.15 a.m. and leave at 10.17 a.m. Train No. 0603 bound for Mangalore will arrive at Suratkal at 9.50 p.m. and leave at 9.52 p.m. The trains will have a two-minute stop at Ankola. — Staff Correspondent

Theatre personality

to be remembered

BELLARY: Raghava Memorial Association, a cultural organisation, will observe the 93rd death anniversary of `Andhra Natak Pitamaha' Dharmavaram Ramkrishnamacharya, a well-known theatre personality of yesteryear and maternal uncle of renowned playwright Bellary Raghava, at Raghava Kala Mandir here on Wednesday.

A play, "Sri Purandara Dasa," will be staged by Abhinaya Kala Kendra, Bellary, on the occasion. The play, which is produced and directed by K. Jagadish, is being staged for the first time. — Staff Correspondent

`Language helps preserve heritage'

DHARWAD: "Language plays a prominent role in preserving the cultural heritage, unity and sovereignty of the country," Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash said here on Tuesday.

Delivering the convocation address at the Karnataka branch of Dakshin Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, he called upon every one to learn as many languages as possible.

Mr. Prakash honoured 17 meritorious students who bagged gold medals in various examinations conducted by the sabha during 2003-04.

Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Basavaraj Horatti spoke. Sabha president R.F. Neralakatti presided over the function. — Staff Correspondent

AIPJD to contest in select constituencies

HASSAN: The district unit of All-India Progressive Janata Dal (AIPJD) led by former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramiah has decided to field candidates in a few selected constituencies of zilla and taluk panchayats. The spokesperson of the party Manjunatha Datta told presspersons that since the party could not arrive at a decision on having alliance with other political parties, it has decided to contest on its own symbol. — Staff Correspondent

Teachers protest

in Hassan

HASSAN: Teachers of Mahiti Sindhu programme on Tuesday took out a procession from Hemavathi statue to the Deputy Commissioner's office urging the Government to cancel tenders invited for the fresh appointments. Protesters formed a human chain at Narasimharaja Circle and blocked vehicular traffic. They staged a dharna and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner urging the Government to confirm their services and increase emoluments. — Staff Correspondent

Eight file nomination papers in Chitradurga

CHITRADURGA: On Tuesday, eight candidates filed nomination papers for the zilla panchayat and the same number for taluk panchayat in the district. Six Congress candidates and one independent candidate have filed nomination papers for the zilla panchayat in Molakalmuru, while one Janata Dal (S) candidate has filed his nomination papers for zilla panchayat in Challakere. Four Congress candidates and one Janata Dal (S) candidate have filed their nomination papers for taluk panchayat in Molakalmuru, while one Congress, one Janata Dal (S), and one independent candidate have filed their papers for taluk panchayat elections from Challakere.

BELLARY: Vasavi Club, Bellary, donated a water tank to the Government High School at Kakkabevinahalli on Tuesday. A.S.
