Gang war likely cause of BJP MLA's killing
GHAZIPUR (U.P.):
BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai and six of his supporters, who were shot dead on Tuesday near Basheri village in Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh, were going to attend a marriage function in Mr. Rai's Mohammadabad Assembly constituency.
Assailants on motorcycles fired a hail of bullets at Mr. Rai's cavalcade.
The area is a desolate stretch with agricultural land around and the MLA and his supporters found themselves trapped once the firing began. The attack appeared planned and the result of a ``gang war,'' the police said.
Mr. Rai was in his 40s and leaves behind his wife and son.
Security tightened
Four companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary have been rushed to Ghazipur district and security was tightened.
In Lucknow, State Home Secretary Alok Sinha said the killing was a sequel to a gang war in the eastern Uttar Pradesh but did not specify as to which group could be behind the attack.
