MYSORE: Noted Kannada writer and former Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University D. Javare Gowda will hold a dawn-to-dusk fast in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Wednesday to press for classical language status for Kannada. Amidst apprehensions of his health condition, the octogenarian writer will hold a symbolic fast from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office.
To return award
Speaking to reporters here, Dr. Gowda threatened to return to the Centre the Padmashree bestowed on him if the Union Government fails to accord classical status to Kannada by December 31, 2006. "I will wait till the last day of this year. If my demand is not met, I will return the Padmashree on January 1, 2007," he said. Dr. Gowda has threatened to embark on a fast-unto-death if the Centre does not respond positively to his demand.
Samiti supports fast
A host of Kannada organisations, including Kannada Jagruthi Samiti, have supported Dr. Gowda's cause. In an appeal, the samiti urged college students and representatives of various organisations to stand by Dr. Gowda's demand. "It requires the support of all the five crore people of Karnataka," the samiti said.
