MYSORE: Mayor Bharathi and Mysore City Corporation Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim have expressed confidence that the Makkaji Chowk Commercial Complex project will be cleared by the end of this year. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday to clear misgivings over the award of the contract, the Commissioner said the councillors have unanimously approved the contract. The ball is now in the Chief Minister's court for clearance.
Project highlights
The complex has been awarded to Maveric Holdings and Investments Pvt. Ltd., which has developed the Garuda Shopping Mall on Magarath Road in Bangalore as a joint venture with Bangalore Mahanagara Palike with a built-up area of 7 lakh sqft. The complex will put Mysore among the cities with state-of-the-art shopping malls. Given Mysore's projected growth, the new project is expected to meet the city's requirement for organised retail showrooms, entertainment centres, multiplex, food court and entertainment zones that have become common features in other cities. The shopping complex with a built-up area of 5 lakh sqft is expected to be completed in 20 months from the day of commencement. It will have 155 shops.
Impetus to commerce
Mr. Ibrahim displayed a copy of a magazine whose cover story deals with the proliferation of malls across the country and listed out the small towns and cities that are witnessing the mall boom. He noted that Mysore is not among them. Being a major tourist centre, such a commercial complex will give an impetus to commerce. He regretted that negative publicity and every development project getting embroiled in controversy will send wrong signals and keep away investors from coming to the city.
