DMs to take over local bodies

`Elections not held due to irregularities'

LUCKNOW: District magistrates are set to take over the reigns of the local bodies in Uttar Pradesh as their terms expire on Tuesday and fresh elections have not been held.

The State Government is expected to issue the notification for the same after Governor T. V. Rajeswar gave his approval for the appointment of administrators in all the local bodies following amendment to the local bodies Act by both Houses of the legislature on November 24 last. The opposition parties have criticised the move saying that the five-year-term for local bodies differed from town-to-town depending upon when their first meeting was held.

They also demanded that present chairpersons and mayors should be appointed as the administrator.

State Urban Development Minister Mohammad Azam Khan said here that as the Government was not able to hold the local bodies elections due to certain irregularities in the delimitation of the wards as pointed out by the High Court and, accordingly, administrator had to be appointed till the new bodies were constituted.

``The new set- up would come into force within a week from Monday and it is mandatory to convene the first meeting of the bodies during this period,'' Mr Khan said. UNI
