Running for HIV children

THEY RAN and apart from increasing their fitness levels, helped raise funds for HIV-afflicted children.

Last weekend saw 1,800 employees of the information technology major Dell, many accompanied by their families, participating in the Dell Champion Road Run, held for the third year in succession. Leading them were sportspersons of the city, including international athletes Ashwini Nachappa and Reeth Abraham, hockey star Ashish Ballal and physically challenged tennis champion Boniface Prabhu.

The employees voluntarily raised Rs. 7 lakhs, including a matching contribution from the company. Romi Malhotra, Managing Director, Dell International Services India, presented the cheque to Ashok Rau, Founder, Freedom Foundation, which cares for HIV affected children.

The run covering about 4.5 km., started and terminated at the Bal Bhavan in Cubbon Park.

The Champion Road Run is one of the company's initiatives for social causes. As a prelude, a HIV/AIDS awareness campaign was organised by Freedom Foundation at Dell's facilities.

Mr. Ashok Rau said: "We thank the Dell employees for their ongoing commitment towards creating awareness on HIV/AIDS and making the children feel they are an integral part of society and for providing life enriching support for three years."

Mr. Malhotra said: "We recognise HIV as a critical issue affecting communities around the world. We are committed to reaching out to less privileged children in the communities around us and we collectively try to make a difference in their lives."
