THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Activists of the Kerala Students Union on Tuesday gheraoed S. Syamala, the acting Controller of Examinations of Kerala University (KU), demanding that the university revoke the Rs.1,000 fine imposed on students who submitted applications for private registration to BA, B.Com courses after the last date of submitting applications with a `super fine' of Rs.450. The last date for submitting applications with the `super fine' was October 31. In continuation of last year's practise the university had levied an additional fine of Rs.1,000 from the students who came with applications for the courses after October 31. Ms. Syamala later told The Hindu that she promised the students that she would favourably consider their request not to charge the additional fine of Rs.1,000. "I have written in the file accordingly. A fine is charged so that students submit the applications on time. In this case, even the last date with a `super fine' is long past," she added. During the time of the gherao there was a strong contingent of police on the university's Palayam campus on account of the interviews for the posts of registrar and controller of examinations that are being held there. However, a final decision on charging the fine of Rs.1,000 is yet to be taken.
