MoU signed on Bt cotton research

Staff Correspondent

DHARWAD: The University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad, will take up collaborative research on Bt cotton with the help of Navasari Agricultural University, Surat.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by Navasari Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor P.S. Ahlawat and UAS Vice-Chancellor S.A. Patil here recently.

As per the MoU, Bt cotton gene will be transferred to Gujarat cotton hybrids and the hybrid varieties will be commercialised by Gujarat State Seeds Corporation, according to a press release issued here by UAS.

As a result, farmers of Gujarat and neighbouring States will benefit as they will get authentic BT hybrid seeds of popular hybrid varieties at a reasonable price, the release has said.

At present, farmers have to choose between Bt hybrids or private companies which are expensive or the illegal Bt cotton hybrids, which can prove to be risky.
