Major upsets by Soumi, Kashyap

KOLKATA: Two youngsters made their presence fell on the penultimate day of the National ranking table tennis championship (East) at the SAI, Eastern Centre, here on Wednesday. Junior girls' top seed and a qualifier in the women's singles, Soumi Mondal, put paid to the aspirations of top seed Poulami Ghatak in the quarterfinals 2-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-4, 13-11, 9-11, 11-8 to reach her maiden semifinals in a ranking meet.

Anal Kashyap of PSPB, another emerging player, also moved into the men's singles semifinals by ousting experienced Sourav Chakraborty of Railways in the quarterfinals 11-9, 6-11, 8-11, 12-10, 8-11, 11-6, 12-10. He had accounted for third seed Subham Chowdhury 11-7, 11-4, 11-9, 12-10 in the pre-quarterfinals.

J. Swarna of Tamil Nadu eliminated fourth seed Mantu Ghosh of PSPB in the quarterfinals 7-11, 9-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-3, 11-6, 11-6 while K. Shamini also of Tamil Nadu sent third seed Vishakha Bijoy of PSPB out of the meet in six games at 11-8, 10-12, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8 in the pre-quarterfinals.

The other surprise in the men's singles was the ouster of fourth seed Arup Basak by Shibaji Dutta at 11-4, 11-6, 11-5, 11-13, 11-5. Dutta, who had lost to Basak in the semifinals in the Northern leg, thus avenged his loss.

In the junior section, boys' top seed Sivananda Seshadri of Indian Bank made his exit in the pre-quarterfinals losing to Subhum Kundu of Bengal at 10-12, 9-11, 10-12, 14-12, 4-11. Later Aman Balgu of PSPB Academy removed fourth seed Sayan Pal Roy of North Bengal 11-5, 11-13, 9-11, 11-7, 11-8, 2-11, 11-6. The other upset was the elimination of second seed Sanil Shetty of Maharashtra. R.S. Raja of Tamil Nadu beat him. Raja won 11-9, 13-11, 11-8, 11-5.

The junior girls' section too had its share of shocks with both third seed A.V. Niveditha of Indian Bank and second seed Neha Agarwal of Delhi bowing out in the quarterfinals. Niveditha lost to Pallavi Kundu of Railways at 14-16, 9-11, 6-11, 5-11 while Neha was downed by Divya Deshpande of Maharashtra at 11-5, 11-9, 6-11, 2-11, 12-14, 5-11.

The semifinals and the finals would be played on Thursday.
