Yashpal quits as Delhi selection panel chief

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Yashpal Sharma on Wednesday quit as chairman of the Delhi's senior selection committee following his axing from the National post by the Sharad Pawar-led Board. Yashpal had just completed one year in the job, having replaced former Test player Kirti Azad.

"I have no grudge against anyone but certainly I am disappointed at being treated this way. I was only doing my job to the best of my ability," said Yashpal, who was identified as one of the three selectors to have backed Sourav Ganguly's inclusion in the team for the first Test against Sri Lanka.

"I am disappointed at the chairman (Kiran More) making a public announcement that the selection committee was divided (3-2 in favour of Sourav) after having earlier said that the decision was unanimous. Was not the same selection committee party to Sourav being dropped from the one-day team," Yashpal asked.

Yashpal had replaced Azad following a decision by the North Zone representatives to back him for two years. "DDCA had proposed the name of Yashpal in place of Azad for the balance period of four years term," had been the North Zone committee's "unanimous" decision.

At the local level, there had been opposition to Yashpal continuing but the DDCA President Arun Jaitley had stood by him. "I thank Mr. Jaitley for backing me but I have no right to continue in the post when the rest of the zone has lost faith in me despite having promised me a two-year term," he added.
