BJP seeks CBI probe, stages walkout in Rajya Sabha

NEW DELHI: The killing of Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Krishnand Rai and his security guards in Ghazipur district in Uttar Pradesh rocked Parliament on Wednesday.

In the Rajya Sabha, BJP members walked out expressing their dissatisfaction with the government's response.

Home Minister Shivraj Patil said the Centre had sought a report and would give necessary directions to the State Government on receiving it. The BJP, however, persisted with the demand for a CBI investigation.

Raising the matter during zero hour, Murli Manohar Joshi (BJP) cited the recent killings of legislators and asked how long the Centre would allow ``the absence of law and order in the State'' to continue. He said Mr. Rai had no criminal background. ``His only crime was that he defeated one of Ansari brothers in elections in Ghazipur. Now, an MLA from a neighbouring constituency is also being threatened.''
