Facts on Manjunath's killing to be ascertained

Shivraj Patil's assurance to Rajya Sabha

NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Wednesday gave an assurance to Rajya Sabha that the Centre would seek information on the alleged murder of the Indian Oil Corporation official Manjunath in Uttar Pradesh. "The Central Government will get information from the State Government and give whatever necessary directions it can under the Constitution, law and order being a State subject,'' he said.

The Minister agreed to a demand from Congress member Jairam Ramesh that the Ministry of Petroleum be informed about the sentiments of the House.

Raising the matter during Zero Hour, Mr. Ramesh said the murder should not be merely seen as a law and order problem or as a security issue of professionals working in public sector undertakings. It should also be looked at from the dimension of the pricing of kerosene and diesel for which the Petroleum Ministry should be involved.

Mr. Ramesh said this was not the only incident of its kind of targeting professionals. Satyendra Dubey in Bihar was murdered for attempting to check corruption in highway contracts.

"If public sector professionals were to be treated as Manjunath and Satyendra, then the public sector future is bleak. This is an issue that affects the economic concerns of the country," he said.
