Varanasi: BJP workers on Wednesday set ablaze three railway stations, a power sub-station and several houses in eastern Uttar Pradesh in protest against the killing of BJP legislator Krishnanand Rai. They set ablaze Ghazipur City, Dhondadih and Jakhaniya railway stations on the Varanasi-Ballia section and blocked the main highway, according to official sources. They set ablaze a power sub-station at Karimuddinpur in Ghazipur district and a fire brigade tender at Parsa, near Mohammadabad, the slain MLA's constituency. A curfew-like situation prevailed in Ghazipur, where the police and state paramilitary force have been deployed in large numbers after BJP workers resorted to heavy stone-pelting, damaged vehicles and set ablaze houses belonging to members of a particular community. Members of a particular community were also assaulted in Panchokhar, Duhiyan and Malsa villages on Ghazipur's border with Bihar, sources said. Violence was reported from Jaunpur, Varanasi, Mau and Ballia too, where BJP activists took out processions.
Toll up
The toll in Tuesday's incident went up to eight, with one of the injured dying in hospital. About 50 party workers had been taken into custody in Mau, sources said. Police vehicles patrolled all affected areas and asked people to stay indoors. PTI
