Wave of woes, models beyond gender

J. Malarvizhi

Chennai: Images of despair and stunning beauty greet the visitor at the Lalit Kala Akademi.

K. Venkatesh, news photographer, has chosen two themes for his photo exhibition, which is on till Friday.

One straddles journalism and emotion.

The section titled `Wave of Woes' retells the destruction sought by the tsunami in Tamil Nadu by capturing the pain of `hapless children and adults struck by the wave of woes'.

The other reclaims beauty from gender and presents Sridevi, a 32-year-old transgendered person from Bangalore, as an aspiring model.

`Models beyond Gender' is a collection of pictures of Sridevi, `capturing her beauty and grace in style, arousing more envy than awe', shot in Kodaikanal.

Through Sridevi, Mr. Venkatesh presents the demands of the transgendered and the artificial nature of concepts of beauty.

Sridevi has been inspired `to defy the status quo' because of the representations of the transgendered in films and television serials.
