CHIRALA: Groupism in the Chirala Municipal Council came to the fore on Wednesday, following the defeat of all three candidates put up by the ruling Congress in the election of co-opted members. Tiruveedhula Balanagendra Ravikumar, husband of Municipal Chairperson T.N.L. Syamalakumari, in spite of the blessings of Finance Minister K. Rosaiah lost to a little known Vemanakonda Krishna Rao. With support from five TDP councillors, Mr Krishna Rao polled 19 votes, against 12 by Ravikumar. In the 33-member council, the Congress got 21, TDP five and the rest were independents. For the two cooptive seats reserved for minorities, Shaik Humayun Kabir and Podili Jayalatha were elected.
