Hadapad Award for N. Krishnachar

BANGALORE: N. Krishnachar, an artist, has been selected for the Nadoja R.M. Hadapad Award for 2005. The award has been instituted after well-known painter R.M. Hadapad, a former chairman of the State Lalitkala Academy. Mr. Krishnachar was a student at the Ken School of Arts at Seshadripuram here, which was founded by Hadapad. The award will be conferred on him by noted scholar M. Chidanandamurthy at the school on Sunday. — Special Correspondent

State unit of Shiv Sena stands up to Thackeray

Bangalore: The State unit of the Shiv Sena on Wednesday decided to sever its ties with the Sena led by Bal Thackeray in protest against his stand on the Belgaum issue and statements against Kannadigas. The decision was taken at a meeting presided over by State unit President Pramod Mutalik and attended by district presidents and State office-bearers. Mr. Mutalik later said they will form a new outfit wedded to Hindutva. — Special Correspondent

Bandh in Kolhapur over statue desecration

Kolhapur: A "peaceful" bandh was observed in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra on Wednesday against the alleged desecration of the Maratha warrior Shivaji's statue in the border town of Nipani, which came to light on Monday. The bandh was called by the all-party action committee, which also condemned the attack on the Belgaum Mayor and the Deputy Mayor in Bangalore recently and protest Karnataka Government's action to dissolve the Belgaum City Corporation.

`Canfest 2005' from Tuesday

MANGALORE: "Canfest", the annual students' festival of Canara College, Mangalore, has been made a south India-level event from this year. The two-day Canfest 2005 will be held at the college from December 6. According to student convener of Canfest 2005 Sunil Kini, entries are coming in from top colleges in Tamil Nadu, Goa and Karnataka. He said events include "Quiz Fizz", "Czar of Wits" (a leadership game), "Themis: Lady Justice" (law), "Godsend" (business acumen), "Imbroglio Mirth" (advertising skills), "Ad-combat" (marketing), and "Around the world in a jiffy" (tourism). Canfest is open for students of B.Com., BBM and B.HRD. — Special Correspondent

CPI (Maoist) opposes continuation of mining

BANGALORE: The Communist Party of India (Maoist) has warned the Government against allowing mining by Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd. beyond December 31, 2005, as reaffirmed by the Supreme Court on Tuesday. In an unsigned statement to the press, the group said the Government should provide alternative jobs to the employees of the company. It has said Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda have been speaking of urging the Centre to allow KIOCL to continue mining, which is "against public interest", it has said.

Takes charge as Commandant

BANGALORE: Brigadier C.M. Cheeyanna from Kodagu district, an alumnus of JSS College Mysore, took over as Commandant, Corps of Military Police Centre and School, from Brig. R. Enayathulla here on Wednesday. Brig. Cheeyanna was commissioned into the Army in the 45 AD Regiment in 1974 and has commanded the same regiment. — Special Correspondent

Nominations filed for panchayat polls

DAVANGERE: Seven candidates filed their nomination papers for zilla panchayat and 12 for taluk panchayat elections in Davangere on Wednesday. Five candidates in Jagalur, one in Harihar and one in Honnali have filed nomination papers for the zilla panchayat elections. Six candidates in Honnali, three candidates in Davangere, one each in Harihar, Harpanahalli and Jagalur have submitted nomination papers for taluk panchayat elections. — Staff Correspondent

G. Umesh joins BJP

BELLARY: G. Umesh, former president of the Congress-controlled Bellary Zilla Panchayat, joined the BJP on Wednesday. At a function organised near the BJP office, Mr. Umesh joined the party in the presence of Janardhan Reddy, president of the district unit, B. Sriramulu, MLA, and Mayor G. Somashekar Reddy. He told presspersons that he joined the BJP as he was being sidelined in the Congress and his contributions were not recognised. — Staff Correspondent

Man burnt alive

HASSAN: A man was burnt alive at Anachihalli village in Hassan taluk when his house caught fire accidentally in the early hours of Wednesday, according to reports reaching here. According to the police, Lakshman (28), his wife Kamakshi and two children were sleeping in their house when a kerosene lamp fell on firewood and caught fire. Kamakshi and the children ran out to safety, while Lakshman was trapped inside the burning hut. — Staff Correspondent

Dharna

HASSAN: Activists of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS), led by State unit President Kodihalli Chandrashekar, staged a dharna in front of the taluk hospital, urging the District Health Officer (DHO) to take action against hospital authorities who are allegedly supplying low quality food and milk to patients.

They withdrew their dharna after an assurance from the authorities. — Staff Correspondent

Life disrupted

DAVANGERE: There was no power supply in Davangere from Wednesday noon. Life in the city was disrupted owing to power shutdown. The exact reason for the power cut is not known.

Spoken English camp

MYSORE: A two-month free spoken English camp will be held here by Kudarathi Media Creations from December 12. According to a statement, English classes will be held in two batches from 4.30 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the premises of the organisation at Samata Complex next to St. Philomena's Church, Ashoka Road, Mysore. Training for pilgrims

MYSORE: The Managing Committee of Masjid-e-Azam will organise a Haj training camp from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on December 3 at Masjid-e-Azam, opposite Meelad Park on Ashoka Road.

Dharna staged

Chamarajanagar: Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha President Vatal Nagaraj and his party workers staged a dharna at Bhuvaneshwari Circle here on Wednesday urging the Centre to accord traditional language status to Kannada. They took out a procession from the Chamarajeshwara Temple to Bhuvaneshwari Circle.
