PONDICHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy who is also in charge of "Home" has said that recruitment of women constables to strengthen the police force in the Union Territory would be held soon. Distributing prizes to winners of competitions on the occasion of celebration of "Women's and Children's Day" organised by the Department of Women and Child Development here on Wednesday the Chief Minister said the Government would consider the suggestion made earlier by A. Anbalagan, MLA, that gallantry awards at the State-level should be instituted to encourage brave and fearless women. Mr. Rangasamy said self-help groups would be given milch animals to launch dairy projects. About 1,800 such groups would get the animals soon. The Government had already relaxed rules relating to the recruitment of women into the rank and file of the Police department. He complimented the service done by the workers and staff of anganwadi centres during the implementation of relief measures in rain affected areas. The anganwadi staff who were regularised by the administration for the first time in the country recently disbursed a sum of Rs. 13 crores benefiting 2.74 lakh families and 10 kg rice as flood relief in the Pondicherry and Karaikal regions.
