NEW DELHI: SemIndia, a consortium of overseas Indians, on Wednesday announced plans to invest $3 billion to set up a semi-conductor manufacturing factory with technology licensed from U.S. based Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). The Union Government as well as the State Government (where the plant will be located) can be equity partners in the project, said AMD officials. The plant would be funded through a mix of options, including venture capital, debt financing and strategic partnership. SemIndia sees Indian demand for semiconductor chips at $30 billion each year by 2015. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed by AMD Chairman Hector Ruiz and SemIndia Chairman Vinod K. Agarwal in the presence of Minister for Communications and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran. Dr. Agarwal said India presented a major market opportunity for desktop and laptop PCs and Internet appliances with analysts expecting the market to experience strong growth in the near future. The agreement allows SemIndia to obtain licence for AMD's technology for SemIndia's planned wafer fabrication and assembly-test-mark-pack (ATMP) operations. AMD and SemIndia will jointly develop and market semiconductor solutions for India. Earlier this year, Mr. Maran met Dr. Ruiz in the U.S. to discuss opportunities to jointly grow the India market. SemIndia plans to manufacture advanced semiconductor chips for PCs, cell phones, set-top boxes and broadband connectivity.
