Probe begins in Ghazipur: SP shifted, SO suspended

Lucknow: Even as preparations to cremate the body of BJP MLA Krishnanad Rai is on at Varanasi amid tight security, the Uttar Pradresh government on Wednesday shifted the Ghazipur Police Superintendent and suspended the Bhawarkol Station Officer (SO) in connection with Tuesday's incident.

All the bodies have been handed over to relatives after autopsy.

The Principal Secretary (Home), Alok Sinha, said SP Ghazipur, Mukesh Babu Shukla, had been shifted and SSP (STF), Akhil Kumar, given his additional charge.

For the time being, DIG (Range) has been asked to officiate in Mr. Kumar's place since he was in Agra. Ghazipur DM was also expected to be transferred.

Disclosing that the probe had started, Mr. Sinha said the police had recovered an abandoned jeep under Mohammadbad area. The jeep bore bullet marks, while blood strained clothes were also recovered from the vehicle.

``Police recovered about 25 empty cartridges from the spot as well as from the jeep which will be sent for a forensic test.''

Mr. Sinha said the situation in Ghazipur and the adjoining areas was peaceful but tense.

"There is no curfew in Ghazipur, but section 144 of the IPC has been promulgated.''

On the demand of CBI probe by the BJP and other parties, the Home Secretary said that Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav was expected to hold talks with the BJP leaders in this regard. --UNI
