HYDERABAD: Anti-Corruption Bureau officials on Tuesday arrested a top official of the Municipal Administration Department working in Hanamkonda of Warangal district on the charge of accepting Rs. 3,000 bribe for repatriation of an employee. Mathukumalli Mallikarjuna Rao Regional Director-cum-Appellate Commissioner of Municipal Administration was arrested in his chamber. - Staff Reporter

Nellore: A woman and her daughter were crushed to death and another daughter seriously injured when a goods train knocked them down on the railway track near Three Theatre Complex on Wednesday. The Railway police have said the bodies are yet to be identified. - Staff Reporter

Woman killed

Sangareddy: Posanpalli Vajramma (65) of Jangampalli village in Mirdoddi mandal was run over by Devagiri Express near Nagulapalli crossing on Wednesday. Vajramma who came to Nagulapalli to visit her sister was crossing the tracks when the Mumbai-Hyderabad Devagiri Express hit her killing her on the spot. - Staff Reporter

Worker dies in accident

Kakinada: A quarry worker Dara Chanti Babu (45) was killed and two others injured when the earth caved in while he was digging in Mukku Konda along the National Highway near Tuni on Wednesday.

Woman ends life

Kakinada: Mannem Bangaramma (60) who lost heavily in the chit fund business reported committed suicide by consuming a pesticide at her house in Indrapalem near here on Wednesday. - Correspondent

MAHABUBNAGAR: Minister for Social Welfare Redya Naik on Wednesday place the principal of Social Welfare Girls' Residential Hostel in Mahabubnagar Krishna Kumari under suspension. Ex-Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh dies

HYDERABAD: Gajjela Jagatpathi (82), former Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh, died here on Wednesday after a brief illness. He is survived by wife and two sons. Although he hailed from Rajampet in Cuddapah district, the IAS officer served in Madhya Pradesh throughout his long and distinguished career. - Special Correspondent

Meet on health awareness

KURNOOL: Gynaecologist N. Nagasulochana has said that child marriages are mainly responsible for cervix cancer in many cases. Addressing a health awareness meeting sponsored by the ICDS and Field Publicity office here on Tuesday, she said that 50 per cent of adolescent girls suffered from anaemia. Social welfare official punished

KURNOOL: Minister for Social Welfare Redya Naik has ordered reversion of Assistant Social Welfare Officer Jakir Hussain on the charge of poor supervisory work. Mr. Naik reviewed the functioning of hostels and other social welfare institutions here on Tuesday. Two wardens were also punished by withdrawal of increments. He asked the hostel staff to take special care children's health and get them examined by doctors periodically and give them nutritious diet. Staff Reporter

RI for sub-registrar

Nellore: Special Judge, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Court, Nellore, P. Mutyala Naidu, on Tuesday, sentenced G. Narsimha Murthy, sub-registrar, to one-year rigorous imprisonment and levied a fine of Rs. 2,000.

Mr. Murthy, while working in Ammanabrolu and Chirala of Prakasam district in 1990s, was convicted of committed irregularities by approving certain registrations resulting in a loss of Rs. 54,971 to the exchequer. Staff Reporter

Five-year RI for attempted rape

Nellore: The Principal Assistant Sessions Judge, Nellore, S. Nagarjuna, on Tuesday sentenced Ch. Krishnaiah of Kakuturu village, Venkatachalasatram mandal, to five years of rigorous imprisonment and levied a fine of Rs.100 for violating the modesty of a 13-old girl when her parents were away from the home. Delay in ration cards' issue irks MLA

ELURU: The inordinate delay in distribution of ration cards irked Congress local MLA Alla Kalikrishna Srinivas during his surprise visit in the city on Wednesday.

Peeved people standing in long queues at a distribution centre at KPDT School complained to the MLA that they were victims of red tape. People complained that there was nobody at the centre to give proper reply. An embarrassed MLA warned officials that he would not tolerate any further delay in this regard. - Staff Reporter

Student's death triggers protest

NIZAMABAD: A student of Government residential junior college at Borlam, Puspha, took ill recently, died at the hospital here on Tuesday.

She was reportedly suffering from diarrhoea was admitted to the Government hospital at Banswada. She belonged to Pothangal village of Kotagiri mandal.

On coming to know of her death, ABVP members staged a dharna at the mandal headquarters alleging negligence by officials and poor conditions in the college. Bodhan RDO Manohar and DSP Madhukar Babu visited the college and enquired into conditions that led to the death of the student. Staff Reporter

ADILABAD: Adilabad Municipal Chairman Digambar Rao Patil on Wednesday launched a Hindi weekly Adilabad Ujala published from Adilabad. He said a weekly newspaper in Hindi was much needed in the considering its large population that spoke Hindi language. Vivekananda school bags top honours

KARIMNAGAR: Students of the Vivekananda Vidyaniketan High School in Bhagathnagar in Karimnagar town bagged four prizes at the district Science fair conducted in Jammikunta mandal from November 27 to 29. In a press note here on Wednesday, school correspondent S. Komuraiah said that the students secured prizes for their presentation on the eco-friendly house which was having a solar energy, bio-gas plant, water harvesting structure, vermin-compost, natural filter cum cooler, janata fridge. Groundnut farmers stage protest

Sangareddy: Farmers in the Kolcharam, Papannapet and Medak mandals registerd their protest with the Andhra Pradesh Seeds Corporation in Medak over the quality of the groundnut seed supplied to them. They alleged that 25 per cent of the seed supplied by the State-owned corporation is damaged. Basing on the complaints, Joint director of Agriculture Madhusudan Reddy verified the stock at the store and found that 70 bags of a particular lot contained damaged seed. The remaining 278 bags were found to be clean and fit for sale.- Staff Reporter

45 litres of arrack seized

Sangareddy: Jagdevpur police arrested a person near Teegul crossroads on Wednesday for carrying 45 litres of arrack on his scooter. U.Balaiah, a native of Kondareddy Chervu tanda of Rajampet mandal in Nalgonda district, was taken into custody for illegally carrying and selling arrack.- Staff Reporter

AIDS cases in Medak

Sangareddy: Even as Medak district has less number of AIDS patients compared to other districts in the State, doctors have confirmed that 49 would be mothers have tested HIV positive in the latest screening done on 4002 pregnant women. These tests were done only in the PPTCT centres in the Sangareddy, Medak and Siddipet Government hospitals.
