Services on metre gauge section disrupted

CHENNAI: Train services on the Villupuram-Mayiladuturai metre gauge section continue to remain disrupted due to breaches. The pattern of services on the section December 1 and 2 will be as follows:

Trains fully cancelled: 6713/6714 Tambaram-Rameswaram-Tambaram Sethu Expresses, 6701/6702 Tambaram-Rameswaram-Tambaram Expresses, 6875/6876 Tambaram-Nagore- Tambaram Expresses and 813/814 Tambaram-Mayiladuturai-Tambaram passengers.

Trains partially cancelled: 6853/6854 Tambaram-Mayiladuturai-Tambaram Cholan Expresses between Villupuram and Mayiladuturai.

As a precautionary measure in connection with the cyclone forecast, the following emergency phone numbers have been provided for the convenience of passengers.

Vaiko against mills' privatisation

CHENNAI: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko met Union Textiles Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela on Tuesday and requested him not to privatise two NTC-owned Mills in Coimbatore — Sharada Mills and Coimbatore Spinning and Weaving Mills.

A press note said Mr. Vaiko pointed out that most of the workers were aged between 40 and 50. Their future was at stake.

He said the present problems were a result of high wages, high electricity rates and production cost. These could be brought down with discussions between the employees and management. — Special Correspondent

Karunanidhi writes to Cuddalore Collector

CUDDALORE: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday sent party leaders to Cuddalore to meet the Collector Gagandeep Singh Bedi and request him to redress the grievances of the flood-affected people.

In a letter to the Collector, he said when he toured the flood-affected areas on November 27, the people had narrated tales of woe and put forth certain demands.

Their petitions were being sent through the DMK delegation comprising deputy general secretary Parithi Ilamvazhuthi, M.R.K. Panneerselvam, Ela. Pugazhendi, and Durai K. Saravanan, MLAs.

Mr. Karunanidhi requested the Collector to consider the petitions sympathetically and take appropriate action to ameliorate their lot. According to Mr. Pugazhendi, the Collector had promised to initiate necessary action. — Special Correspondent

18 panchaloha idols unearthed

NAGAPATTINAM: Eighteen panchaloha idols were unearthed while digging to lay the foundation for a school building at Arunthavampulam in Nagapattinam district on Wednesday afternoon. The Thirukkuvalai taluk officials took possession of the idols and kept them in their custody.

Official sources said the idols were that of Nataraja, Sivakami, Kalingamardhana, Sundarar, Manickavasagar, Satyabhama, Rukmini, Perumal, Lakshmi, Rama, Sita, Parvathi, Prathosha Vinayakar, Radha and Nardhana Vinayaka.

Besides, two `Thiruvasis' and a `Hundi' were also found at the site.

Pollachi V. Jayaraman, Minister for Food and Cooperation, who was inspecting the relief work in the area saw the unearthed idols. — Staff Reporter

Life term for four

TIRUNELVELI: A sessions court here has sentenced four persons to life term in a murder case on Wednesday .

According to prosecution, MGR alias Visuvaasam (34), an accused in a murder case and hailing from Pottal near Palayamkottai, was murdered in 2004. The Palayamkottai police arrested Appadurai (34), Ayyadurai (32), both hailing from Palayamkottai, Chellappa (30), Kanthan alias Kandasamy (31), Kumar (32) and Nambi (22), all hailing from Pottal. Kumar and Nambi were acquitted.

DVAC raid

Tuticorin: Sleuths of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption on Wednesday conducted surprise checks at the office of the Deputy Commercial Tax Officer at Kovilpatti and seized unaccounted cash of Rs.20,000 from there.

Fast observed

TIRUNELVELI: Over 300 construction workers affiliated to the CITU observed a fast at Jawahar Grounds, Palayamkottai, on Wednesday. They sought free house site pattas to poor workers.

Killed in accident

ERODE: Eswari (40), wife of Ramasamy of Karungalpalayam, died in a road accident on Wednesday. According to the police, Eswari was walking near the burial ground when a motorcycle hit her. She died at the Government Headquarters Hospital.

Temple renovation

ERODE: Ten thousand temples in Tamil Nadu would be renovated at a cost of Rs. 25 crores. Of this, 6,000 temples would be in areas where the Adi Dravida population was high and 4,000 temples in places where the population of BC and MBC people was heavy, said the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister P.C. Ramasamy here on Wednesday. In a press release, he said that 501 such temples would be renovated in the district. The temples were identified and Rs. 25,000 each would be allotted to them.

Textiles, cash stolen

ERODE: Textiles worth Rs. 4 lakhs and Rs. 25,000 was stolen from a textiles shop on Vasugi Street. According to the police, when Rangasamy of Edayankattuvalasu, came to his shop on Wednesday, he found the doors broke open and 22,000 meters of processed white textile cloth and the cash missing.

Post office burgled

KARUR: Unidentified miscreants burgled Rs.35,000 in cash from the Thanthonrimalai post office near here on Tuesday night.

The crime came to light on Wednesday morning when the staff who opened the post office at Thanthonrimalai on the Karur-Dindigul highway found to their horror that the locks of the safe containing the cash lay broken. The postmaster reported the matter to the police, who have launched a hunt for the burglars.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 120.19 feet on Wednesday. The inflow was 11,718 cusecs and the outflow 10,882 cusecs.

Stray elephants return to forest

THENI: Two stray elephants that damaged standing crops and threatened the residents of Pannaipuram village went back to the reserve forests on Western Ghats in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Pannaipuram near Goodalur was tense on Tuesday as the elephants entered the village and destroyed standing maize crops. They stayed in the field and did not come out till last night. Forest officials guarded the field throughout the night. — Staff Reporter

Entrance exam

Ramanathapuram: All India Entrance Examination for admission to Standard VI and IX of Sainik School, Amaravathinagar, Coimbatore district, will be held on 8th January 2006.

In a press release issued here, the school said that only boys aged between 10 and 11 years as on July 1, 2006 for standard VI, and boys aged between 13 and 14 years as on July 1, 2006 and studying in standard VIII in recognised schools were eligible for admission to standard IX.

Interested people should send Demand Draft got from State Bank of India, Amaravathinagr in favour of Principal, Sainik School, Amaravathinagar, along with a self-addressed stamped envelope. Candidates of SC/ST could send the DD for Rs.225.

MADURAI: The Directorate of Distance Education, Madurai Kamaraj University, has extended the last date for admission to all courses till December 15. S.
