NEW DELHI: Amid a walkout by Bharatiya Janata Party members, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Mani Shankar Aiyar assured the Lok Sabha on Wednesday that new liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) connections would be released from December 1, and the gas supply would stabilise soon. Replying to a calling attention motion moved by BJP and Communist Party of India (Marxist) members on the LPG shortage, the Minister said the Government had never instructed oil marketing companies (OMCs) to stop releasing new connections. However, he said, in view of their inability to meet the demand, they had stopped giving new connections for some months. "Now, with the permission of the Parliamentary Standing Committee, I have done what a Petroleum Minister is not authorised to do. I have directed OMCs to release new connections and they have accepted the Ministry's request to begin doing so from December 1." However, given the backlog, he said the situation would take about a month to stabilise.
`Subsidy cheque'
Also, Mr. Aiyar used the prolonged discussion to ask members to reflect on whether the present subsidy on LPG should be extended evenly to both the rich and the poor. "Effectively, with every cylinder, the Government is handing over a cheque of Rs. 198 to every household," he said underscoring the subsidy on LPG.
