CHENNAI: "If women are given enough opportunities, India will become a developed nation very soon," said D. Viswanathan, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University, at the valedictory function of a training programme on `Building skills of SHG women in establishing information kiosks,' held at RMK Engineering College, Kavarapettainear here recently. Speaking on the importance of development of entrepreneurial skills, Mr. Viswanathan said, "My dream is to train more women from villages." Organised by the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women and the Anna University, the 12-day training programme was held at 40 centres across Tamil Nadu. "A great amount of thinking and planning has gone into this project," said K. Hemalatha, Director, Centre for Empowerment to Women, Anna University. "The course material was designed in such a way that all the centres could follow the time table comfortably." The course covered MS-Word, Excel, Photoshop and Tally accounting. "The world of computers and the Internet is the window to the world," said K. Skandan, Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women. "Only institutions like these can bridge the gap and bring about a change." Pankaj Kumar Bansal, Collector, Tiruvallur district, said, "This is just a beginning, not the end." He urged the women to go for well-established business options for which raw material and a market were readily available. R.S. Munirathinam, Chairman, RMK Engineering College thanked the University for giving the college such an opportunity. The college was ready to provide interested women from the self-help groups with free space and computer facility. Twenty-five women, who participated in the programme received certificates.
