NEW DELHI: The All-India Trade Union Congress has resolved to intensify the agitation against the ``pernicious'' economic and labour policies of the Government, and support the labour rights of workers in Information Technology (IT). Talking to reporters at the end of the organisation's 38th session, AITUC general secretary Gurudas Dasgupta said a definite action plan had been chalked out to ensure that the IT sector workers got the right to form a union and go on strike. He, however, did not elaborate on the plan. In a declaration adopted at the end of the five-day session, the AITUC decided to take the initiative to consolidate, expand and advance the organisation to take the trade union movement to a new high, fight for rapid social and economic changes that would benefit people in collaboration with other ``brotherly'' trade unions and coordinate with all progressive social and political forces. ``No one is untouchable, including the RSS-backed Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh,'' Mr. Dasgupta said, adding that this decision had been taken on the advice of the delegates.
Against Pension Bill
The session resolved to stall reduction of interest rate on the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), prevent enactment of the proposed Pension Bill, stop dilution of labour laws, fight for a comprehensive welfare legislation for the unorganised labour, build up resistance against police intervention to curb trade union activity and fight for trade union rights. It warned that any attempts to malign and marginalise the trade union movement would be resisted. The session demanded a ``pro-people'' Budget in 2006 with massive investment in rural sector, providing for massive job opportunities, health care, education and social infrastructure. The AITUC does not oppose FDI if it expands job opportunities and improves the productive potential of the country. It only opposed FDI in strategic sectors. The AITUC sought protection for dignity of women labour and opposed commercialisation of womanhood, be it in advertisements, media or tourism.
