BANGALORE: Unearthing a major racket where failed students were issued convocation certificates after re-evaluation, the Bangalore University has suspended two Assistant Registrars and two Junior Assistants attached to the examination branch. Following up on a complaint, the university had found that a student of A.P.S. College, R. Paneesh, bearing registration number 983AB125, had been issued a passing marks card and a convocation certificate by the university's examination branch although the student had failed in the B. Com., examination. After verification, it was found that the student had failed in English in the first and second years of his degree. The university has withdrawn the degree certificate sent to the college. While scrutinising the ledger books, it was observed that 10 other candidates, who had not completed their B.Com. degree, were listed in the eligibility criteria for presentation of degree convocation certificates. The students listed were Mable Monteiro, a student of Open University; Umesh M.S., Seshadripuram College; Sampath Kumar, V.V. Puram College; K. Nagaraj, V.V. Puram College; Priya Srinivasan, Mount Carmel College; Mirzya Jarar Ali, B.H.S. College; Meena V. Naik, B.S.V.P., Bangalore; Basavaiah, Sidhartha, Marlur; Nirmala G.B., Government F.C.G., Kunigal; and Shivaramaiah, Government F.C.G. Kunigal. The university has reportedly taken steps to withdraw the degree certificates and pass marks of these students for cancellation, and to keep them in abeyance. Sources said the marks were entered when the students applied for re-evaluation. The answer scripts were allegedly not sent to the valuers and the students were declared passed and issued certificates on payment of money, the sources added. The university has now ordered a verification of all the revaluation scripts. In this connection, the university has suspended N. Dasappa, Assistant Registrar, Examination branch; Anjee, Assistant Registrar, marks card section; M. Shivalinge Gowda and K.V. Narayanappa, both junior assistants in the Examination Branch. Ordering an enquiry into the episode, the university has placed the officials under suspension to ensure that the enquiry is conducted in a fair manner and to prevent tampering of official record. A police complaint is being filed in this regard, university sources said. When contacted, Vice-Chancellor M.S. Thimmappa said the matter was being taken seriously and the university wanted to get to the bottom of the affair. Stringent action will be initiated against the guilty, he said.
