NEW DELHI: Despite stiff opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party Councillors, the Congress-led Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Wednesday passed a resolution paving the way for payment of Rs.100 to every student enrolled in its primary schools for buying jersey. Noting that there had been a delay in floating tenders for purchase of jerseys, Standing Committee chairman Mukesh Goel agreed to the proposal and asked Municipal Commissioner A.K. Nigam to release Rs.3.72 crores. Mr. Nigam assured the Standing Committee that the Finance Department would release the money within three days after receiving the proposal. Mr. Goel asked the Education Department officials to ensure that the money was disbursed to students within 10 days after receiving the funds. He warned the Education Department officials that action would be taken against them if any student were found not wearing a jersey during winters. However, Bharatiya Janata Party Councillor Vijender Gupta opposed the move stating that money would not be utilised by students and their parents for buying jerseys.
