Mustafa Chemmad is not a stranger either to Malappuram or to those who are into providing succour to the needy. Mr. Mustafa, who has polio, has been into social service for several years. It will be a moment of great joy for him when he accepts the State Social Welfare Department's award for the best social worker from Local Administration Minister K. Kutty Ahmed Kutty on Saturday. Hailing from Tirurangadi, Mr. Mustafa has been at the helm of various relief organisations, including Kerala Vikalanga Sahaya Samiti and Road Accident Prevention Council. The public call office he runs at Chemmad is a place indeed for the public - it is a news centre of the town. He has kept separate boxes for the local publications so that people can drop their news handouts. Mr. Mustafa has got several awards before. He was honoured in 2003 at a talent meet organised by the Social Welfare Department. He won the maiden J.C.C. Award in 2004. He also won the K.V.S.S. award for the best organiser in 2004. In the same year, he also bagged the Vithayathil Devasya Memorial State Award instituted by the Mithravedi. Mr. Mustafa says he never wants sympathy. "We should never yield to our physical deformity," he says.
