SALEM: Collector A. Sukumaran inspected the Allikuttai and Veeranam tanks and its surplus courses here on Wednesday. While visiting the Allikuttai tank, he noticed the heavily encroached surplus course of the tank and asked the Salem Corporation officials to remove the encroachments and restore it. He said the channel carried surplus water to the Seelavari tank and then to the Tirumanimutharu River.
Restoration work
The restoration of the channel would help prevent from breaching during heavy rain. He also instructed the Corporation officials to strengthen the bunds of the tank. The Collector also inspected the restoration of the heavily silted surplus course of the Veeranam tank. He said this channel would be linked to the Tirumanimutharu River. Earlier, Mr. Sukumaran reviewed the developmental works taken up by the Salem Panchayat Union to the tune of Rs. 90 lakhs.
Colony houses
The works included construction of a total of 58 colony houses, programmes under the `Namathu Gramam' scheme, road and drainage formation under the Village Self-Reliance scheme and activities under the MLA constituency development fund. Revenue Divisional Officer Selvaraj and Corporation Commissioner T.T. Balsamy were present during the review.
